Fast food can generally be split into two categories. The first includes beloved classics like burgers, fries, and tacos—comforting dishes that evoke childhood memories and provide a taste of nostalgia for adults.
The second category? It features some of the most bizarre food creations ever invented. These are items that have no precedent in culinary history and arguably shouldn’t exist! However, for fast food chefs, “shouldn’t” often becomes an intriguing challenge.
This article focuses on that second category, showcasing the strangest fast food menu items to ever appear in this country. (The outrageous offerings found on menus in other countries are so abundant and wild that they deserve a separate discussion.) We’re talking about dishes that look one way but taste completely different—like a pizza topped with hot dogs (and mustard!) on the crust, or a latte flavored like buffalo wings. When I say weird, I truly mean weeeeeird.
Most of these items were fleeting—none lingered long on menus. (The buffalo wing latte certainly didn’t become a best-seller, which is quite a surprise.) Yet they were real, and for a brief moment, they offered something spectacular. Or at the very least, spectacularly eccentric. Now, where’s the mustard? I’m about to enjoy some pizza with hot dogs baked right into the crust.
To celebrate Wicked, Starbucks launched two limited-edition beverages inspired by the film. Naturally, I tried them both.
